21 Years of Volunteering Achievement
When British Railways closed the line from Wroxham to Lenwade in 1982, many thought this to be the end of the route as a railway. Through the vision and drive of a committed group of enthusiasts and support from the local authority, the 15” gauge Bure Valley Railway was opened on 10th July 1990. This year the Bure Valley Railway is celebrating its 21st Birthday.
The Bure Valley Railway is Norfolk’s longest Narrow Gauge Steam Railway and operates over the nine miles between the market town of Aylsham and the Broads town of Wroxham. The railway is owned by a small group of enthusiasts and is operated entirely on a not for profit basis, with any profits being reinvested. With the dedication and commitment of a small team of paid staff and active volunteers the railway now carries over 120,000 passengers each year.
On Sunday, 6th March 2011 The Bure Valley Railway will be hosting its annual Volunteers Open Day for anyone interested in volunteering on the railway. The day will give the opportunity to meet existing staff and volunteers and see behind the scenes, including a chance to drive a steam engine!
Andrew Tunwell, General Manager, says “the volunteers’ contribution has been essential to the running of the railway over the past 21 years and will continue to play an important role in its long term future. Volunteering for the Bure Valley Railway is a great way to get involved with the local community, make new friends and learn new skills. Whatever your age, whether you are male or female, if you have a couple of hours to spare or can make a more regular commitment, we would welcome your help”.
The Bure Valley Railway invites you to see what fun you can get from becoming a volunteer and looks forward to seeing you on Sunday, 6th March.
