Jungle Express 10 ¼ inch
The Jungle Express first opened in 1937. It was at first a 12 inch gauge line when Paignton Zoo and Chessington Zoo were in association (Chessington Zoo ran a 12 inch gauge line). Trains were run by two steam outline petrol engines which moved to Chessington in 1946 when the line was regauged to the more common gauge of 10 ¼ inches.
The line is a 500 yard circuit which runs around a lake and over two bridges on route, with a station called ‘Lakeside’ next to the main pathway of the zoo.
Trains are operated by D6718, whilst the Guest built petrol engine is a reserve.
