South Downs Light Railway 10 ¼ inch

The line in its current gauge has been in existence since late 1999, opening to the public in Easter 2000. Although the line was previously 7 1/4 inch gauge and had been in existence since the late 60's - early 70's. All of the buildings were upgraded and restored to former glory. The signal box was kitted out with a 14 lever Westinghouse frame, with 6 signals currently dotted around the line. The extension, bringing the line to just shy of 1km in length, was completed and officially opened in the Summer of 2006. The South Downs Light Railway has a large collection of 10 1/4 inch gauge engines in the UK, with up to 10 steam engines and 3 diesel engines on site at any one time. A new station building and waiting room & ticket office have been recently completed, which can provide undercover protection for a complete train as well as keeping waiting passengers in the warmth. A new engine shed and workshop is the next project, and is hoped to be completed in the next couple of years.
