North Bay Railway 20 inch

The North Bay Railway first opened in 1931, and provides a useful transport function, taking passengers on a scenic ride for 1300 yards between Northstead Manor Gardens and the Scarborough Sealife Centre and North Bay. The line is built to the unusual gauge of 20 inch, to accommodate the lines Hudswell Clarke built locomotives, 'Neptune' and 'Triton' both being built for the line, with 'Robin Hood' and 'Poseidon' arriving in 2006, after more varied careers. The line was operated by the council until 2007, when the permanent operation was handed over to the North Bay Railway Company, who have developed the railway, adding a cafe/bistro, new station building and extended shed at Peasholm Park station, with plans in place for other developments including a museum about the lines life at Scalby Mills station.
